Sobre o simpósio

O Simpósio de Neuroengenharia foi lançado no ano 2015 pelo Instituto Santos Dumont (ISD) com o objetivo de complementar a formação de futuros pesquisadores e alunos, estimular a geração de novos conhecimentos por meio de pesquisas independentes e conectar profissionais de modo a permitir a  articulação de pesquisas e atividades de ensino como ferramentas de transformação social.

A programação inclui mesas redondas e palestras de convidados, além da apresentação de pôsteres de trabalhos submetidos ao evento por alunos e pesquisadores. Entre os temas dos trabalhos de alunos e pesquisadores no evento estão Interface Cérebro-Máquina, Neuromodulação, Processamento de Sinais e Imagens Biomédicas, Biomecânica e Reabilitação.

Tiago Henrique Falk, Ph.D.

Professor at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Tiago H. Falk received the B.Sc. degree from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil (2002) and the M.Sc. (2005) and Ph.D. (2008) degrees from Queen's University, Canada, all in electrical engineering. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Holland-Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, affiliated with the University of Toronto. At the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS-EMT) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he directs the Multimedia/ Multimodal Signal Analysis and Enhancement (MuSAE) Lab. His research interests include human-machine interaction, multimedia/biomedical signal analysis and enhancement, sensor fusion, neuroengineering, rehabilitation engineering, and machine learning.

Prof. Falk’s lecture at the IX Neuroengineering Symposium will be the opening lecture, entitled "Emerging Applications with Mobile BCIs: Challenges and Opportunities for Innovations in Signal Processing and Machine Learning".

Thiago Luiz Russo, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of the Department of Physiotherapy at the Federal University of São Carlos

Thiago Luiz Russo has a B.Sc. degree (2003) and a Ph.D. degree (2008) in Physiotherapy from the Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil. He has conducted Postdoctoral research on the same university (2008-2010) and did a sandwich PhD on the University of Rome - La Sapienza, Italy (2007). He is currently Associate Professor of the Department of Physiotherapy of the Federal University of São Carlos and permanent member of the Postgraduate Program in Physical Therapy of the same university. His research interests include arterial dysfunction, sedentary behaviour, intracranial compliance, molecular biomarkers and neuromuscular plasticity.

Prof. Russo will present the lecture "Advances in physical activity monitoring and the interaction with robots in the post-stroke" at the IX Neuroengineering Symposium.

MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit at the University of Oxford

Vitor Lopes dos Santos graduated in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2011, and obtained his Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 2015 at the Brain Institute of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil. Vitor's PhD research was supervised by Prof. Adriano Tort to develop a new framework for the analysis of neuronal assemblies and their temporal dynamics. In 2012, Vitor received a Science Without Borders grant from the Ministry of Education of Brazil to spend a year in the Centre for System Neuroscience of Leicester University, where he developed new methods for extracting information from spike trains under the supervision of Prof. Rodrigo Quian Quiroga. Back in Brazil in 2013, Vitor completed his PhD work on hippocampal network physiology with Prof. Sidarta Ribeiro and Prof. Richardson Leão.

Vitor joined the Unit as an Investigator Scientist in November 2015. His work in the Dupret Group continues to focus on hippocampal cell assembly dynamics, and the investigation of how they coordinate with other brain areas during learning and memory processes.

Ana Raquel Lindquist, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of the Department of Physiotherapy of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte

Ana Raquel Lindquist has a B.Sc. degree in Physiotherapy from the Federal University of Paraíba, a specialist degree in Physiotherapeutic Evaluation and a MSc. degree in Education from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, and a Ph.D. degree in Physiological Sciences from the Federal University of São Carlos. She did a sandwich PhD on the Freien Universität Berlin, Germany.  She is currently Associate Professor of the Department of Physiotherapy of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and member of the Postgraduate Program in Physical Therapy of the same university. 

Prof. Lindquist's research interests include Neuro-sensory Motor Development of children with and without disabilities, Analysis of different types of Physical Therapy Interventions on the Functioning, Function and Participation, Teraphy based on context and knowledge translation on the participation of children with disabilities, and Evaluation, intervention and assistive technologies for people with neurological dysfunctions.

Discovering the use of Qualisys System: from science to clinical practice

To demonstrate the caption and data reduction of gait kinematic data of a healthy individual using Qualisys® and Qualisys Track Manager (QTM). Methods: assessment will occur in two steps: in stage 1, the individual will walk at normal speed, and Qualisys® will capture kinematic data and in stage 2, the QTM will perform the data reduction. This software will extract the spatial-temporal variables of the lower limbs. Expected results: it is expected that researchers and professionals working with movement analysis will learn to use Qualisys® and apply it in their clinical

Gait training modalities in rehabilitation

Review the most common (conventional) gait training modalities to more modern approaches with robotic systems. The goal of this workshop is to explore trends in the use and development of robotic technology for lower-limb and gait rehabilitation. The workshop will identify the sensors, materials and control strategies that include these robotic devices. It will also identify these technologies’ requirements for rehabilitation applications. Understanding both the trends and needs that imply using this technology, the workshop will aid to identify the challenges to using them in clinical applications.

Extraction of features from biomedical signals (EEG, PPG, ECG, EMG) plays an important role in many pattern classification and intelligent systems design for neurotech applications.
